Gain consumer insight with Generative AI

MIT Sloan researchers find that LLMs can compress consumer research from months to days through "digital twins" of customers, AI-moderated qualitative interviews and large-scale analysis of unstructured data — letting small research teams run studies at enterprise scale.

Consumer research has always been bottlenecked by people: recruiting respondents, running interviews, coding transcripts. MIT Sloan Management Review argues that 2026 is the year LLMs collapse those bottlenecks — without sacrificing the rigor that brand decisions depend on.

Three new research methods

  • Synthetic consumer "digital twins": LLMs simulate target segments to pre-test concepts in hours, narrowing the field before any human respondent is recruited.
  • AI-moderated qualitative interviews: agents conduct semi-structured conversations at scale, transcribing, coding and clustering on the fly.
  • Unstructured-data analysis: reviews, support transcripts and social posts become a continuous research stream rather than a one-off project.

Where it shines, where it doesn't

The MIT team is careful to flag the limits. Digital twins are excellent for triage and concept screening, weak for predicting actual purchase behavior. AI-moderated interviews are great for breadth but still need a human researcher in the loop for emotionally complex topics. The biggest gain is for small in-house teams that previously could not afford continuous research at all.

The VietMarkAI take: the highest-leverage use today is not replacing your research agency — it's giving every product manager and marketer a "research co-pilot" they can query before they ship.
