1. Three tools for running a partnership
Once a relationship is established, three entities help you operate it methodically:
- Milestone — Commitment checkpoints (revenue, delivery…).
- Task — Specific work items that arise as the relationship is maintained.
- Update — Periodic progress notes about the relationship.
2. Milestones: commit and measure
Milestones are measurable checkpoints. For example:
- "The partner commits to introducing 5 sales opportunities in Q1."
- "Complete technical training for 10 partner engineers by 30 June."
- "Reach VND 500M in distribution revenue within the first 6 months."
The combined milestone value across all collaborations gives you a forward view of partner-channel revenue.
3. Tasks: break down the work to do
Each relationship typically generates small tasks like:
- Prepare product introduction materials for the partner.
- Schedule a solution introduction meeting.
- Track NDA and partnership contract legal review.
- Run a technical training session.
Each task has an assignee and a deadline so nothing falls into the "I thought someone else was doing it" gap.
4. Updates: short, periodic progress notes
An update is a short journal entry on the state of the relationship. Recommended cadence:
- After every meeting with the partner.
- Every 1–2 weeks even when nothing major has happened (so the team always knows the latest).
- Whenever something important changes: stage transition, NDA signed, new opportunity opened.
5. Tips
- When writing an update, be explicit about what is blocked so leaders can step in promptly.
- If a milestone slips, document the reason and the recovery plan — don't just push the date.
- Portal access lets external partners read updates with you, enabling two-way transparency.
